Whitehorse’s singer song writer Kim Beggs teamed up Toronto musicians Oh Susanna and Justin Rutledge for the Dark Strangers Tour of the Yukon.
They came out to Haines Junction in April 2014 and we recorded an impromptu house concert.
Three storytellers on the edge of darkness, who set their tales to music, come together from the city and town, to talk, sing and tell. Justin Rutledge, Oh Susanna and Kim Beggs each possess a unique and poetic voice, recognized for their abilities to capture the human condition in three-minute movies that only the ears can see. These strangers will gather you close to listen, and enchant you in song and story.
Justin Rutledge
Justin Rutledge’s albums garner impressive amounts of critical acclaim. Between his debut, No Never Alone (2005), his sophomore release, The Devil On A Bench In Stanley Park (2006) and third album, Man Descending (2008), Rutledge has earned a Juno nomination, a Galaxy Rising Star award, countless year-end critics’ picks, the title of Toronto’s Best Local Songwriter (NOW Magazine), a spot on the 2008 Polaris Prize Long List and a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination. His fifth album “Valleyheart” won him the 2014 Juno award “best roots/traditional solo album.” Justin has shared the stage with artists such as Blue Rodeo, Dolly Parton, Martha Wainwright and Great Lake Swimmers. – See more at: http://justinrutledge.com/
Oh Susanna
In a career spanning just over a decade, Oh Susanna has released five critically acclaimed records noted for their contemplative, thoughtful, folk-inspired songs that transport listeners into an imaginary emotional landscape. Whether applauding a young woman’s need to stand tall in the face of dire circumstances, expressing love and tenderness to a dying loved one or embodying the anger of a soldier’s widow, Oh Susanna’s songs aim straight for the gut. The timeless themes of love, loss and longing are expressed in soaring melodies and vivid lyrics. These songs beg careful listening. She has released six albums and received Juno nominations in 2004 and 2008. – See more at: http://ohsusanna.com
Kim Beggs
“Kim Beggs’ voice lures you in with its emotive melancholy before you’ve had time to absorb the fact that she’s a formidable songwriter.” – NOW Magazine
Combining delightful acoustic arrangements with a voice that’s been described as a cross between Nanci Griffith and Iris DeMent, Kim Beggs reflects on the journey through life and death, the wanderer’s spirit and the loss of loved ones. Whitehorse may be a long way from the American south, but it’s notable for the same sort of hardscrabble lifestyle and unshakable sense of community that influenced early Appalachian music over a century ago. Having just released her fourth album ‘Beauty and Breaking’, Kim Beggs has established herself as a stalwart member of the Yukon music scene. Kim has represented the nation at Canada Day celebrations in London’s Trafalgar Square and has had nominations for CBC Radio’s Songquest competition, plus for the Canadian Folk Music Awards and Western Canadian Music Awards. – See more at: http://www.kimbeggs.com/
